Controlling aggressive slurries in an alumina plant is a difficult task. Erosion of wear parts, leakage, and protection of downstream piping all become critical issues. In consideration of these factors, and the demanding application that an alumina plant offers, HEC presents the Keystone F638 slurry control valve. This is no ordinary butterfly valve. The engineers at Keystone designed this valve to perform in the extreme environment that an alumina plant produces.
Wear resistance of the valve is accomplished by using an airfoil shaped wing disc and venturi shaped replaceable liner. Common perception is that any material situated in the flow stream will quickly erode in the severely abrasive alumina media. The unique shape of the F638 disk actually patterns the flow toward the center of the valve and away from the ends of the disk where other valves see extensive wear and quickly fail. The disk ends are protected by silicone carbide overlaid spacers that protect the critical connections between the shaft of the valve and the disk. The majority of the wear is directed downstream of the disk, where the elongated body of the valve protects the down stream piping,another critical failure point of competitors installations.
Specific design placement of the wing-disc and venture liner contributes to opening the valve angle with the same pressure drop capabilities. This eliminates the severe cavitation damage which is caused by poor flow conditions.
The Keystone F638 is fully repairable. Body liners and discs can be removed and the valve rebuilt to return the valve to new performance levels. The valve is designed to be maintenance friendly and is a proven performer with thousands of installations worldwide.
