Appcor Gauge Guards

Gauge Guards are used to protect vacuum or pressure gauges, transducers and switches from the effects of process liquid contact with instrument mechanisms. The distinction between "chemical" type guards and "slurry" guards is that slurry guards have oversized process connections and provisions for purging solids trapped in inlet piping and guard housings. Appcor is the only manufacturer of guards specifically designed for slurry service, having installations since 1976 in Mining, Sand and Gravel, Chemical and Pulp and Paper industries.

Gauge Guard

Other makes of guards are not specifically designed to protect instrumentation from process liquids containing suspended solids. Of the three styles of Appcor slurry guards, we rate the S875 as being "good" . An oversized process fitting will assist in minimizing accumulation of solids in the guard housing. The S875 guard has .75 inch to 1.25 inch process connections, 1.25 inch being the most popular. Gauge connections can be .25 inch or .5 inch NPT. A .25 inch connection is located in the process side housing.

If it is felt that a .25 purge valve, as provided with the S875 guard, might not be large enough to clear accumulated solids from the guard and associated inlet piping, use the "Better" S1025with a .75 inch purge connection. Process connection options are .75 to 1.25 inches NPT, instrument connections .25 to .5 inches NPT This is the Most Popular gauge guard

The Gauge- To prime or not to prime?

Contrary to the usual recommendation of guard manufactureres, most gauges used with Appcor guards do not have to be primed with transmitting fluid. Guards themselves must be filled with fluid

If your process calls for a chemical style guard, we have the model C871. This guard is not intended for slurry service. They are strictly for use with process liquids containing no suspended solids. However, unlike most makes of chemical guards, the C871 has an ultra-sensative "rolling" diaphragm with high displacement capacity and sensitivity to 1" WG. Process and gauge connections are available as .25 or .5 inches NPT.

Essco Recessed Impeller Pumps

Recessed impeller pumps are characterized by impeller vanes that are situated at the back of the pump casing, which leaves an open flow passage through the pump for large solids handling capabilities. The maximum size solids that can be handled is limited only by the size of the inlet and outlet of the pump, making this design capable of pumping any size solit that can enter the suction piping. For example, an Essco 6x6x12 will handle up to a 6" solid without clogging the pump.

During operation of this type of pump, the fluid is drawn into the casing through centrifugal action with only a small amount of the total inflow coming into contact with the vanes of the impeller. Through fluid dynamics, this action imparted onto a small portion of the fluid causes a centrifugal rotating motion to the entire fluid body within the casing. Large or stringy solids entering the casing are transported by the rotating fluid from inlet to outlet without most making contact with the impeller.

Another facet of this type of pump is its ability to handle entrained gases or bubbles which can cause other types of centrifugal pumps to lose their prime and become "air locked", resulting in a stoppage of flow. In recessed impeller pumps, gas entering the pump can be swept out as part of the revolving fluid leaving the casing without causing a buildup of air to displace fluid and causing th epump to stop performing it's duties.

The efficiency of a recessed impeller pump is less than traditional centrifugal pumps. The trade off for the ability to handle large and or fibrous materials is an increase in horsepowewr required to handle duties vs standard centrigugals. Efficiencies in the 40-50% range are common for these pumps. However, a slightly larger motor is much less expensive than downtime, and the Essco Recessed Impeller Pump can keep your process running by handling oversized materials that bring other pumps down.

IMCO Fiber Glass Reinforced Plastic

Cargo Ship

FRP products ( Fiber glass reinforced polyester or vinyl ester) are designed to stand up to industrial applications where conventional materials prove inadequate. Manufactured from tough structural FRP shapes, they are real problem-solvers wherever the minimization of corrosion, conductivity, or weight is desirable.

Because the color is built-in, IMCO's FRP products rarely need painting, even after years of service. The latest techniquies in ultra-violet masking also ensure that your FRP equipment will stand up as well outdoors, as it will indoors.

All IMCO products are designed and built with safety foremost in mind. The use of premium grade, fire-retardant material is standard. Independent tests certify that all applicable ANSI and OSHA codes are met or exceeded. High-visibility yellow is used on all safety equipment.

If your facilities involve any of the areas listed below-or even others not listed- you can benefit from IMCO products in your new construction, plant modernization, or continuing maintenance program.
